What Is Scaling?

What Is "Scaling" And Why Is It Important?

One main element of CrossFit workouts is "scaling". It comes with various uses and benefits that help you achieve your fitness goals. But, what exactly does it mean to "scale" a workout?

Scaling in CrossFit works by modifying an exercise to best suit your individual needs. Sometimes, it pertains to your unique fitness level, where you can increase/decrease weights, difficulty, etc. This can help you to either lessen or increase the intensity of your workout based on how you feel physically AND mentally.

When first being introduced to a fitness setting like CrossFit, it's important to make a gradual transition with scaling in order to smoothly enter the environment and improve your fitness safely and effectively.

Scaling is also an important tool when it comes to accounting for a preexisting injury or physical limitation. Exercise is meant to improve your health, not worsen it! That's why scaling is crucial: Substituting one exercise for another, or using specific devices to aid your workout, can make it the most beneficial for YOU and your goals!

The aim of scaling is to maintain a high-intensity workout while still being safe and avoiding any injury. It’s always important to stay in tune with your body, and scaling can help you adjust your workouts when needed!
